Pereira D’Oliveira Madeira wines
Another long established company with an extensive range and lovely tasting room in central Funchal, and is therefore a must on any wine exploration trip to Madeira.
The building is one of the oldest in Funchal, dating back to the 17th Century. D’Oliveira has one of the largest selections of aged Madeiran wines on the island. The lodge is very close to Barros e Sousa….so if you can manage two convivial tastings in one day…….
D’Oliveira wines are widely available across the island, and a good range are presented to travelers returning home at Funchal airport.
One to buy: These wines are beautifully packaged and the medium dry at 5 years old is very good indeed. D’Oliveiras have a considerable range of older wines as well as a supply of Terrantez.
The company Pereira D’Oliveira ((Vinhos) was founded in 1850, and is still in the hands of the founding family. It has however grown by acquisition and can trace its roots back to the 1820’s. Its Headquarters in Funchal dates to the 1600’s!
D’Oliveira is reported to produce about 150,000 litres of wines per year, and produces a wide range of wines including Tinta Negra wines at 3, 5, 10 and 15 year old.
D’Oliveira also produces Sercial Verdelho, Bual, Malmsey and Terrantez wines. it does not appear to favour the more exotic blendings of grapes that some of its peer producers are increasingly experimenting with.
Wines marketed up to 10 years old are produced using the Estufagem process, wines marketed as 15 years old are produced using the Canteiro process of maturation.
D’Oliveira’s is believed to have very considerable stocks of older wines – some 1.5 million litres, including wines from long gone producers subsequently acquired by this firm.
The wines are widely available across the island and at the airport, often in attractive packaging making an ideal gift.
The friendly tasting rooms in central Funchal are well worth visiting as you can see it is full of maturing wines and interesting bottles of Madeira.
