Levadas in Madeira are irrigation channels cut into the mountainous landscape of Madeira to irrigate the island by bringing water from the wetter north of the island to the drier south. They are an amazing feat of engineering and labour. It is possible to walk the Madeiran landscape following the levada paths. Many Medieran farmers where wellies to walk in the actual levada where the path disappears, or the edge is too sheer to contemplate. This image is courtesy of Blandy’s.
